What The Assumption Means For Women

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity that takes place every year on August 15. On this day we celebrate the “New Eve”, the woman who said “yes!” to God’s plans for her life and “no” to the despair offered by the Devil. Mary relied on the Lord her whole life, and even when she encountered the worst of times - watching her Son die on the Cross - she knew that redemption and new life were possible!

But do you ever feel more like the first Eve?

The Eve who gave into the serpent (Satan), but also was blamed by Adam (who also tasted the forbidden fruit!) when he said, “The women [blames her] that you put here with me [blames God] she gave me the fruit, so I ate it.” Can anyone else hear the shrug in that last part? Like, “sorry God, this is on her and you. Not my circus, not my monkeys.”

Imagine how she must have felt when she was thrown out of Eden! When she realized that childbirth would be painful, and raising children in the wilderness might be more painful still.

Have you experienced trauma because of your husband’s pornography use? Are there wounds in your life you are ready to let go of?

Let’s be clear: The Fall was Eve’s responsibility. It was also Adam’s responsibility. And, of course, it was also the work of the Devil.

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven calls us not to despair over the works of the devil but reminds us that MARY CHANGES EVERYTHING. You don’t have to walk around with the weight of Eve’s decision on your shoulders. Not only are your sins forgiven by Christ’s work on the cross, but God gave us Mary as the “new Eve.”

So. Quit. Living. Like. Everything. Is. Your. Fault.

You are a daughter of the Mother of God. The Mother of God extends her love to you and to Eve (who is not an evil character, but one who teaches us to seek restoration with the Most High.)

Look up, child.
