Much to the dismay of her many suitors, St. Justina of Antioch, known for her incredible beauty, dedicated her virginity to the Heavenly Bridegroom. The pagan sorcerer, Cyprian, believed that he could corrupt this 4th century saint with his magic spells. He sent demons to attack St. Justina’s purity, but through prayer and fasting, she remained strong.
What prayer did St. Justina use when tempted with lust?
She began with the Sign of the Cross and then she prayed these words: O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, lo, mine enemies have risen up against me and have prepared a snare for my feet! My soul is brought low, but I have remembered Thy name in the night and am made glad. When they encompassed me round about, I have fled unto Thee, hoping that mine adversary might not rejoice over me, for Thou knowest, O Lord my God, that I am Thy handmaiden. For Thee have I kept the purity of my body, and to Thee have I entrusted my soul; wherefore, preserve Thou Thy lamb, O good Shepherd. Do not permit the beast which seeketh to devour me to consume me, and grant me to prevail over the evil desires of my flesh.
St. Justina’s ability to withstand the temptations of the devil led Cyprian to embrace Christianity and eventually to sainthood. Both St. Justina and St. Cyprian died as martyrs of the faith.
Unfortunately, lust is a prevalent sin in our world today. Pornography is a billion dollar industry that because of technology is accessible in an instant. If your spouse struggles with sexual sin, you are not alone. Use St. Justina’s prayer as your own prayer when struggling with feelings of lust or use it to intercede for a loved one who struggles with sexual sin.
