In a several month sting this spring dubbed “Operation Broken Heart”, more than 2,300 pedophiles were arrested after being targeted for online illegal activity. Their crimes ranged from child sexual abuse to distribution of child pornography.

The number of these sorts of crimes is growing, and the increase in pornography and sexual addiction is a proven contributing factor. If 2,300 is the number of perpetrators they caught this year, how many more are out there?

Teach your children early and often about their safety, their private parts and yes, even about pornography. Many predators use a child’s natural curiosity to introduce them to pornography to desensitize them to what acts they will be expected to perform. One of the easiest ways is to incorporate teaching moments with your children and using available resources like Good Pictures/Bad Pictures, Wonderfully Made Babies and Plunging Pornography.

Remember, teach your kids:

  1. They can tell you anything and you won’t be mad.
  2. No one will hurt them or you if they tell you when someone makes them feel bad, scared, or uncomfortable.
  3. If a bathing suit covers a part of the body, no one should be viewing those parts of their body, nor should they be viewing someone else’s private body parts, either in person or online.
News stories like this are both reassuring (that criminals were caught) as well as alarming. Yet, as we all know, awareness is the first step to prevention. Together, we can increase awareness, education, and hopefully, decrease the number of children who are exposed to pornography or taken advantage of.
